Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
HIPAA compliance for dentistry has three components: Privacy Rules, Security Rules, and High Tech/Breach Notification. These rules are not specific for dentistry, but apply to all areas of health care, which can make them seem very complex and even overwhelming. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that administers the rules allows for scaling down some of the requirements to make them manageable and meaningful for a small health care facility such as a dental practice. It does not, however, exempt small dental practices from compliance with the rules. Mary Govoni & Associates provides evaluation, training and documentation services to assist dental practices in complying with the requirements of the HIPAA rules. These services include employee training, both initial and annually-required updates; documentation of privacy and security policies, security risk assessments and all other HIPAA-required documentation, assistance in the case of a HIPAA complaint or audit; and abatement assistance in case of HIPAA citations and fines.
